The Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) and the Association of Netherlands Municipalities (VNG) are stepping up their cooperation. The VNG Caribbean Desk, which will serve the Caribbean Netherlands (Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba), will be launched on July 1, 2024 and will be co-financed by the BZK. VNG Chairperson Sharon Dijksma and BZK Kingdom Relations Director General Roald Lapperre announced the establishment of the VNG Caribbean Desk at the VNG Annual General Meeting in Groene Hart, the Netherlands, on Tuesday.

With the establishment of the VNG Caribbean Desk, VNG hopes to further strengthen its support to public entities in Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba. VNG’s knowledge and expertise in providing services, offering platforms and safeguarding interests will be used to strengthen policy, legislation and implementation.
Special Members
The islands are special members of the VNG, but due to their special status they do not have access to all VNG services and products. Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba have indicated in meetings with the VNG and ministries that they could benefit from more services and support from the VNG. Among other things, the VNG Caribbean Office will support Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba in a series of executive and legislative assessments.
Pilot Project
The VNG Caribbean Office will be launched as a 1.5-year pilot project, during which stakeholders, including islands, will assess in which policy areas VNG support to islands could be most useful, and how the project could be structurally secured and financed.
