The main industrial center of the Republic of Kiribati

Betio is the most populous island in the country. It is also a major industrial center. The area is home to major power plants, shipyards, and ports. Almost the entire central area of ​​the island is occupied by the extensive airport.

Betio is the only island where you can see many relics related to the famous “Battle of Tarawa”. It is the largest war memorial in the Pacific Ocean. In 1943, the US Marines landed in the Tarawa area. The Betio area was where the main base of the Japanese army was stationed. It was here that a bloody battle took place, in which about 5,000 people died. In November 1943, Betio was defeated along with Tarawa. South Tarawa

The territory is the official capital of the Republic of Kiribati. It is located on Tarawa Atoll. As of 2005, the population was approximately 40,000.

The capital city consists of the municipalities (Bonriki, Bikenibeu, Betio and Bairiki) located on the island of the same name.

Almost all government, educational, commercial and other important facilities are located in the capital and are spread across the city’s various towns.

There are many edible fish on the island, which is why it has become a favorite destination for fishing enthusiasts.
