Despite the increase in the number of migrants worldwide in 2023, fewer people came to the Netherlands: 332,863, 17% less than in 2022. In recent years, the vast majority of people came to the Netherlands for work, study or love. A relatively small number of people came to seek asylum. At the same time, 2023 was a challenging year for migration, and asylum centers were under great pressure. The number of Ukrainian refugees admitted to the Netherlands also increased last year, from less than 91,000 to 110,000.
On 14 June 2024, the government presented the fourth edition of the State of Migration Report to the Dutch Senate and House of Representatives. The report contains facts and figures on various aspects of migration and outlines the main developments in 2023.
the measures taken
The government strives to control migration at both the domestic and international levels. For example, the Netherlands has established extensive migration partnerships with several countries of origin. Close cooperation with Morocco, for example, has led to an increase in the number of returns. A new European Agreement on Asylum and Migration was launched. The agreement provides for mandatory screening at external borders, which is crucial for the Netherlands, and speeds up asylum and repatriation procedures for people with limited asylum prospects. In addition, the agreement aims to strengthen solidarity between member states.
The Netherlands has also taken more measures to provide housing and shelter for residents with residence permits, for example, through various pilots to provide shared accommodation in the municipality where they will be relocated, and to provide flexible housing for target groups in urgent need of housing.
