The coronavirus situation in the Netherlands remains worrying. Since the last press conference on August 6, the number of infections and hospitalizations has continued to increase. If we are not careful, we will quickly lose all the progress we have made. That is why the government has announced intensified measures.
Most infections occurred at private gatherings
Some additional measures are being taken at the national level based on the latest advice from the Outbreak Management Team (OMT), which suggests that private gatherings of people in their homes are where most infections occur. This includes family events, birthday parties, drinking with neighbours and social gatherings between friends.
Maximum capacity: 6 guests
The most important new measure is that the government is strongly and urgently advising people to limit the number of guests they have in their homes to a maximum of six people (excluding children under 13). This includes indoors and outdoor spaces such as gardens. Guests should also be asked if they have any symptoms and if so should not attend. It goes without saying that people should maintain a distance of 1.5 metres at all times.
Assign seats to each person
Parties, drinks receptions and other events involving large numbers of people are best held in hospitality venues, where there is more space and guests have designated seating, can register their contact details and must confirm they are symptom-free. Guests should maintain a distance of at least 1.5 metres between each other and avoid physical contact. The government will ask venue rental companies and owners and managers of restaurants, bars and cafes to ensure compliance if they have not already done so. There will also be a greater focus on this in terms of enforcement.
home work
Of all the measures introduced since the outbreak, the recommendation to work from home as much as possible has proven to be one of the most effective. This recommendation has no time limit, so the advice remains valid: work from home as much as possible.
Self-isolate for 10 days
If you have travelled to an area with an orange travel warning due to coronavirus, or if you have been in contact with someone who has tested positive, you should self-isolate. The OMT recommends shortening the quarantine period from 14 days to 10 days.
Having symptoms? Stay home and get tested
Furthermore, anyone who develops symptoms should continue to stay at home and get tested. This will ensure that the vast majority of infections are prevented. If the test result is positive, source and contact tracing will be carried out. This will allow us to have a clearer picture of the virus situation in the Netherlands so that we can take quick and targeted action to prevent the virus from spreading further.
Children with symptoms should stay home
Everyone is working hard to make schools safe. Part of that is making sure children stay home if they have symptoms. Children must also stay home if someone in their home tests positive; this was reiterated at the press conference.
Summary
- From now on, you may not receive more than 6 guests in your home (indoors and outdoors), with the exception of children under 13 years old.
- Continue to work from home whenever possible.
- The self-isolation period has been shortened from 14 days to 10 days.
