Wednesday 19thday and Thursday the 20thday In June 2024, the Dutch Caribbean Nursing and Youth Organization (ZJCN) organized the first “Future of Healthcare in the Dutch Caribbean” conference. Held both in person on Bonaire and online, the conference brought together chain partners and stakeholders to discuss unique healthcare challenges and opportunities in the Dutch Caribbean. Several experts shared their insights on topics such as equal healthcare, the future of healthcare systems, and digitalization. Workshops and field trips to healthcare facilities were also organized to discuss and improve healthcare quality and accessibility.

The meeting took place following the publication of the final report, The Caribbean Netherlands – A Review of the Health System, conducted by the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies. The report provides a detailed overview of the current state of healthcare in the Caribbean Netherlands, the results achieved since 2010 and the improvements needed to bring healthcare to the level of the European Netherlands. The report can be found at here.
By organizing healthcare conferences, ZJCN brings together chain partners and stakeholders to discuss opportunities and challenges in healthcare. The Caribbean Netherlands faces unique healthcare challenges. The island nature, in addition to the actual backlog in healthcare, brings specific needs and weaknesses. In addition, health issues, health literacy, perceptions and expectations about healthcare are different from those in the European Netherlands.
Attendees
The conference brought together experts to share insights on equal health care, the future of health systems, digitalization and more. Together, they explored how to ensure quality and access to health care in a sustainable way. Speakers included Tie Tjee, Senior Advisor for Strategic Network Leadership and Jamiu Busari, a pediatrician at Horacio Oduber Hospital and Professor at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Canada and Associate Professor at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. Commissioners Nina Den Heyer (Bonaire), Reuben Merkman (St. Eustatius) and Eviton Heyliger (Saba) also attended the conference and shared their valuable experiences and insights.
Workshop
In addition to inspiring speakers, several workshops were held, including “The Future of Healthcare”, “Digitalization” and “Health Systems in Transformation (HiT)”. At the HiT workshop, Ewout van Ginneken and Nathan Shuftan explained in detail the findings of the final report. In addition, field visits were organized to various health facilities in Bonaire, including Fundashon Mariadal Hospital.
The important themes of cooperation and equality
An important conclusion was that cooperation between islands and with chain partners is an important factor in continuing to improve healthcare together. Equivalence was also a recurring theme. Among other things, it was discussed whether healthcare in the Caribbean Netherlands should be comparable to that in the European Netherlands. In response, one participant said: “We should not focus on equivalence compared to the European Netherlands, but rather strive to provide the best healthcare for our islands.”
The event was attended by many chain partners from the Caribbean region including the Netherlands, Curacao, Aruba and St. Maarten, and together we reflected on the success of the inaugural show.
