If you are exposed to the sun too much without adequate protection using creams with a protective factor or appropriate clothing, the skin can burn. However, people often take long-term exposure to the sun without protection for granted, without considering the consequences for the health of their skin. – If you get burned, it is necessary to heal the skin as soon as you notice the burn. Get out of the sun immediately, if possible in a closed area. It is recommended to take a shower with cold water to relieve the pain. After taking a bath or shower, the skin should be gently patted dry with a towel. It is necessary to apply a moisturizing cream containing aloe vera as soon as possible to soothe the burned skin. It is best to do it while the skin is still wet, advises Dr. Lovre Pedié, a specialist in dermatology and venereology at Zadar General Hospital.

Cold compresses or wet bandages should not be applied to the skin.

– If the burn is more severe, you can take ibuprofen or acetylsalicylic acid to reduce pain and swelling. If blisters appear, let them heal on their own. Under sterile conditions, you can pierce them with a sterile needle and then use an antiseptic spray, Dr. Pedi recommends.

Still, dermatologists urge that prevention is better than cure.

– The most important thing is to protect the skin from the sun to prevent burns and reduce the risk of skin cancer and premature skin aging – according to Dr. Pedié.

– Seek shade and try to avoid strong sunlight, especially between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. when the sun is strongest. Wear lightweight sun-protective clothing, such as long sleeves, pants, and a hat. Dermatologists recommend that you apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher on skin not covered by clothing.

As mentioned earlier, creams based on aloe vera are the best option for sunburned skin care. However, on social networks, people claim that olive oil, white vinegar, and even white wine “saved” them.

– Olive oil has antioxidants and will not hurt to soothe skin after sun exposure. However, white vinegar dries the skin and in this case it damages it. The skin barrier is damaged and can lead to more damage. I am not sure about white wine either – Dr. Peddie concluded.

Most burns heal within five days. “In case of particularly severe or extensive burns, severe pain, elevated temperature and dehydration, seek help,” doctors wrote on the Croatian Institute of Public Health website.

Be careful with homemade creams and essential oils

Because of the numerous ingredients and nutrients in various essential oils, it is not advisable to use them to treat sunburn. Dr. Lovra Pedié says that most essential oils contain fragrance and other properties that may irritate burns or worsen other skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or contact dermatitis.
