The Dominica Association of Industry and Commerce (DAIC), in partnership with the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Business School, offered leadership training for mid- and senior-level managers at the Fort Young Hotel from 12 to 15 September 2016. The Effective Leaders Workshop included sessions on Global Thinking and Strategic Management, Empowerment and Employee Engagement, and Leading Organizational Change. The goal is to increase the effectiveness level of workshop participants, enabling them to focus more on choosing the right priorities based on the realities of their business environment. Although there are hundreds of definitions of leadership, people know more about leaders than they do about leadership. Currently, the region is experiencing a “leadership crisis”. To quote Timothy Antoine, Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, in his speech “The Economics of Leadership” (2016): “The demand for leadership in the region exceeds the supply. The workshop aims to demonstrate to managers that they must be able to achieve goals through others, which involves the ability to understand, inspire, create engagement and motivate their leaders. “This course has helped me understand myself better.” “It’s an eye-opener. ” “It is important to learn how to embrace diversity in the workplace” were some of the reactions shared by the workshop participants. Entrepreneurs from Freelance Secretarial Services and Allorzee Business Ventures received financial support from the Ministry of Commerce, Enterprise and Small Enterprise Development to attend the workshop as the ministry seeks to build capacity within the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector. The Ministry of Commerce, Enterprise and Small Enterprise Development also provided financial support to the Executive Director of DAIC to attend the workshop, demonstrating the ongoing partnership between the two entities.
