The central government’s “Don’t Let Cyber Crime” campaign is dedicated to identifying and preventing cybercrime. A common method of crime is to mislead people online. Criminals use personal circumstances and impersonate others to successfully deceive the target person.
Recent studies have shown that online deception is sophisticated, making everyone vulnerable to being deceived.
“If you were face to face with criminals in real life, you might not be so easily misled. But online, it’s much more challenging. More and more people are falling victim to cybercrime. Criminals are getting more and more sophisticated, and sometimes it’s hard to distinguish between real and fake messages. With this campaign, we aim to help people recognize online deceptions faster so that they check the sender first and, if in doubt, just click away,” explains Minister of Justice and Security Dilan Yesilgöz-Zegerius.
Learning interest
According to Statistics Netherlands (CBS), around 2.2 million Dutch people were affected by cybercrime last year. In addition to suffering financial losses, they often suffer emotional damage. For example, they feel unsafe and lack trust in others.

How does it work? Criminals often exploit personal situations online to obtain personal information. They pretend to be someone else.
