this Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA) We are pleased to announce that Bonaire Coral Reef Restoration Workshop, It will be held from June 17 to 19, 2024 at the Bonaire office. The event will bring together stakeholders, experts and practitioners from the Dutch Caribbean and beyond to advance coral reef conservation and restoration. Some sessions will be open to the public online.

The Bonaire Coral Reef Restoration Workshop aims to share best practices and protocols in coral reef restoration. With a focus on coral and fish restoration, hands-on field workshops will be conducted by: Bonaire Reef Regeneration Foundation and the zoo BlidorpRofar ReevesThe workshop will also explore opportunities for collaboration under the DCNA Critical Habitat Protection and Restoration Program.

Bonaire Coral Reef Restoration Workshop Highlights:

Coral Restoration

Insights from Bonaire Reef Regeneration FoundationCaribbean Biodiversity Research and Management (CARMABI) and SECCO International including coral fragmentation, micropropagation and larval propagation techniques.

Herbivore recovery

Van Hall Larenstein The University of Applied Sciences will present methods for restoring native herbivores, such as different sea urchin and snail species. Herbivores reduce harmful algae, thus improving the corals’ chances of survival.

Fish recovery

zoo BlidorpRofar Reeves) will introduce new methods of fish reproduction, focusing on herbivorous fish.

Terrestrial coral spawning

Coral Spawning Laboratory Coral spawning techniques, larval propagation, and new system designs for scaling up coral production will be covered. The workshop is sponsored by: Blidorp Zoo.

Guest Speaker: Bonaire Coral Restoration Workshop

Attend the online Bonaire Coral Restoration Workshop, a diverse mix of presentations that will bring together stakeholders, experts and practitioners to advance coral reef conservation and restoration efforts in the Dutch Caribbean. The Bonaire Coral Restoration Workshop will facilitate knowledge sharing on restoration best practices and protocols, leveraging local expertise to foster collaboration where feasible.

The first day will focus on coral restoration and the second day will focus on herbivore (fish and sea urchin) restoration.

Francesca Verdis

Francesca Virdis, managing director of the Reef Regeneration Bonaire Foundation (RRFB), will give two presentations.

first dayFrancesca will explore innovative in situ nursery systems, advanced coral propagation and transplanting techniques.

Francesca has over a decade of field experience in restoring Bonaire coral populations and will share key lessons learned and how promoting genetic diversity at outplant sites can enhance coral resilience and contribute to the success of our restoration program.

the next dayFrancesca will demonstrate how to incorporate key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics into your coral restoration program to enhance strategy development and improve program efficiency and effectiveness. Join her to explore how RRFB can enable timely interventions, support regular decision-making, and facilitate the overall management of large coral restoration projects through real-time tracking of coral production and preset reports.

Kelly Radin Halls

Kelly Latijnhouwers, Restoration Technology Manager at SECORE International and a scientist at the CARMABI Research Station in Curacao, will share the ins and outs of larval propagation efforts in the Caribbean.

Learn how to apply these methods in a live setting to achieve a successful restoration. Join Kelly to learn about the latest tools and techniques in this exciting field.

Alvin Hilkema

Alwin Hylkema is an associate lecturer at Van Hall-Larenstein University of Applied Sciences and a senior researcher at Wageningen University. His research focuses on interventions to increase the resilience of coral reefs. Alwin will share the innovative methods they have developed for restoring Diadema sea urchins, which can now be farmed in large numbers.

You will also learn about the bottlenecks that exist in Diadema recovery so you can decide which approach would be most useful for your organization. In addition, he will share some preliminary results on recovery approaches for other species. Join him for a session discussing herbivore recovery throughout the Caribbean!
