Today, State Secretary Alexandra van Huffelen (Kingdom Relations and Digitalization) officially launched the Under the Hill-2 social housing project on Saba. The project consists of three buildings with a total of 18 homes with 1, 2 and 3 bedrooms.

Secretary of State Van Huffelen said on “Below the Hill 2”:
“This project shows that it is possible to build affordable housing on Saba. With commitment and perseverance, we have managed to transform a very steep hill into a new home for people who desperately need affordable housing. Down the Hill 2 offers a new perspective for the residents of Saba. It shows how much can be achieved through collaboration between passionate parties. A huge result in a beautiful location!”
Construction Industry Cooperation
The 18 social rental houses were built by the public entity Saba (OLS) and the Dutch housing company Bazalt Wonen. The roads and retaining walls near the houses were made possible thanks to EU subsidies. The Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations provided financial support for the completion of the houses. The Saba public entity provided 18,000 square meters of government land for the construction.
50 additional social housing units
In total, the Under the Hill project currently consists of 38 homes: 20 homes were built in the first phase and 18 homes have now been completed in the second phase. A further 50 affordable homes will be built in the future to supplement the total number of 38 homes. Letter of Intent between State Secretary Alexandra van Huffelen, the Executive Committee, Bazalt Wonen and the Own Your Own Home Foundation (OYOHF).
The Caribbean Netherlands Policy Agenda
Housing shortages, rising prices and population growth mean that it is becoming increasingly difficult for many people in the Caribbean Netherlands to get affordable rental or home ownership. Therefore, the Netherlands has developed a policy agenda together with the islands to make affordable housing more accessible to more people. The agenda also protects the living environment on the islands. It was published on January 22nd2023. Read more about the policy agenda on VolkshuisvestingNederland.nl.
