Following the death of Mr. Mike Espat, the government will hold a by-election in Toledo East on July 17

Since the death of the Honorable Mike Esparte, the election of a new regional representative for the Eastern District of Toledo is imminent. Tonight we can tell you that the government plans to hold a by-election on July 17. Prime Minister John Briceno said he has ordered the preparation of a letter to the Governor to draft and issue the writ.

His Excellency John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “I think we are considering it, I don’t know if I should say it now. I have asked for the writ to be prepared and a date has been set in consultation with the Elections and Boundaries Commission to see when they can prepare the voters’ list, and I hope to get it as early as possible, and the date will be July 17, which is my birthday, so I will be working in East Toledo that day.”

As for the nomination day, the Department of Elections and Boundaries said that the nomination day must be between 15 and 21 days before the election. This means that the nomination period is between June 26 and July 2. So far, there are four candidates in the race, namely Dr. Osmond Martinez of the PUP, Dennis Williams of the UDP, Wil Maheia of the BPP and Ray Coleman who is running as an independent.
