Where is this amazing place located and what does it have to offer?

The Turks and Caicos Islands are formed in the Atlantic Ocean. They are an extension of the famous Bahamas. The area attracts the attention of water sports enthusiasts (snorkeling and diving), since the coastal waters of the archipelago have a huge coral reef, which is the largest in the entire Caribbean.

Turks and Caicos is a fascinating archipelago of about 30 islands and cays in the vast Atlantic Ocean. The local population lives only on some of the larger islands. The capital and largest population center is the town of Cockburn. This town is located on Grand Turk Island. The most popular resort area has become Providenciales Island.

The territory of the Turks and Caicos Islands was discovered by the Spanish conquistador Juan de León. It took him a short time to discover Florida. In the distant 17th century, one of the most valuable products found in the Islands – salt – became a cause of struggle between England and Spain. This struggle lasted for a long time, and in 1766 the islands officially became a British colony. Today, the Turks and Caicos Islands are a British territory, governed by a governor and an executive council.

Population of Turks and Caicos Islands

Almost all of the local population (about 90%) is black. They are descendants of slaves brought to the islands by the British in the 17th century to work on the numerous plantations. The remaining 10% of the population is white and mixed race (Canadians, as well as British and American owners of local businesses and real estate).

The islands’ main source of income is tourism. The area is also a major fishing center, supplying clams and lobsters to some of the largest restaurants in the United States.

South Caicos

If you want to explore the most colorful historical sites, you should head to South Caicos. South Caicos. The main town here is Port Cockburn, which was home to one of the largest salt mining industries a few centuries ago. Today, important landmarks here include buildings built in the 18th century. A large portion of these buildings are made of wood.

Providenciales

This island of the Turks and Caicos is most attractive for lovers of famous resorts. Non-standard attractions, as well as modern infrastructure make spending time on this land a real pleasure. There is a unique farm here, where royal giant shells are cultivated. The atmosphere of the facility has been preserved for decades, making it a fascinating trip for tourists to enjoy.

Natural attractions are an added luxury that can put a wonderful mood. Walking through the old plantations, you will forget the passage of time. Here, time has completely stopped.

East Caicos

The island is characterized by the fact that there are few local residents. It has almost no infrastructure and attracts attention with its numerous plantations. It was on this land that the wealthy plantation owners built their cottages. Today, it is almost uninhabited land with a lot of swamps. The main attractions of East Caicos are the ruins of Jacksonville (an old estate) and the mangroves. There are caves near the aforementioned estate. They are interesting, because evidence of ancient primitive people was found here.

Middle Caicos Island

The island attracts the attention of lovers of picturesque natural landscapes. What it lacks in tourist infrastructure, it makes up for with some beautiful places. One of them is Conch Bar. This national park is located in the center of the island and features a unique complex of caves that stretches up to 25 kilometers in length. The caves are filled with amazing stalagmites and stalactites. In addition, there are blue, clear lakes.
