It all started when the teacher was 28. During the trial, Rebecca Joines (her real name) explained that she had just ended a nine-year relationship and was “flattered” by the attention of the two teenagers. The inappropriate behavior made the teacher “happy” and she joined in their games.

“I will always be Rebecca’s victim”

She first gave her mobile phone number to the first teenager as part of a math exercise and then flirted with him on the social network Snapchat. The teacher and her student later met in real life. During one of the meetings, Rebecca Joines bought the 15-year-old a Gucci belt worth £350 (€413) before taking him back to her apartment and having sex with him twice.

The professor was arrested for these facts, released on bail and prohibited from unsupervised contact with minors. The young woman, who had a “mental breakdown,” returned to her parents. During the hearing, the teenager explained that Rebecca Joines refused to tell him the baby’s due date, gender or health. The child was born in early 2024 and was taken away within 24 hours. “The thought of not being able to see my child is heartbreaking,” he said. “I will always be a victim of Rebecca and will always be connected to her through our child,” he continued.

“You are an adult.”

The teacher continued to deny the facts during the trial. “You haven’t really provided any details, you continue to deny these crimes and remain silent about the painful impact these boys have suffered,” Judge Kate Cornell told the defendant at the hearing. “You are an adult (…) You failed to enforce the limits of appropriate behavior, but you deliberately violated them,” she added.

“Women can still be paedophiles; the term is not reserved for men. Men and boys can still be victims of sexual abuse,” responded Chief Constable Beth Alexander of Greater Manchester Police, who led the investigation.
