She was known by as many names as her nationality or titles: Dorothée de Biron, Princess of Courland in Russia, Countess of Périgord, Duchess of Talleyrand, Duchess of Dino in France, Duchess of Sagan in Prussia… Born in 1793, the youngest of the last independent Duke of Courland and his third wife, Dorothea von Medem, was one of four daughters. Talleyrand’s nephew, Edmond de Périgord, was a gambler and erratic, and she divorced him in 1824 after bearing him three children.
