A Beginner’s Guide to Swedish Lucia:
Lucia Day is a pre-Christmas custom, particularly common in Sweden, and is celebrated on December 13, 2016. The holiday is always on December 13, the day the Christian church commemorates Saint Lucia and was the shortest day of the year before the Gregorian calendar reform. It is also not a public holiday in Sweden.
Although St. Lucia’s Day is nominally a day to honor the saint, today it has little religious influence. The most important elements are wearing white robes and candles, eating traditional saffron pastries (lussekatter), singing Lucia songs, and choosing a local Lucia.
The celebrations usually start in the morning at home and continue in kindergartens, schools and workplaces. Lucia is played by a girl, traditionally the eldest daughter in the family. She wears a white gown with a red ribbon around her waist and a wreath with candles in her hair. She is often followed by other girls with candles in their hands (tärnor), sometimes star boys (stjärngossar), gingerbread men (pepparkaksgubbar) and dwarfs (tomtar), forming a real procession. Due to the risk of burns, children nowadays mostly carry electric candles.
Lucia Days are also becoming increasingly popular in Norway, Denmark, and Finland. German partner communities also host events, often with guests from their respective cities. (Source: Wikipedia, License: GNU FDL)
