But none of these are good enough reasons compared to why you should lock your doors at night – to survive a house fire. This is actually one of the key fire safety tips that you must know because this is how you prevent a fire from spreading. It’s also important to be aware of common home fire hazards.
Closing your door may not seem like a big deal, but if a house fire breaks out, it can give you more time to escape the fire at night.

Forty years ago, the average time to escape a house fire was 17 minutes. However, since most furniture, fabrics, or most building products are now made of synthetic materials, the occupants of the house only have three minutes to get out. This is a huge time difference and, frankly, not much time to escape to safety.
Some simple tips on how to prevent house fires are easy to follow:
- Install smoke alarms on all levels of your home, inside and outside bedrooms.
- Have an escape plan. If a fire breaks out in your home, know how to escape safely.
- Close your bedroom door when you sleep.
