The Tornado of Khujand
Reprinted from Varorod OIT’s Neighbors publication.
Some elders and BroadCast Unitedlectuals from religious circles said that whenever social justice disappears, false witnesses increase, adultery and corruption prevail, and bureaucrats oppress the people, God’s wrath will come. Because most elders affirmed that the natural disasters in recent days, such as floods and terrible strong winds, are the wrath of God and the result of gathering together due to injustice.
God’s Wrath or a Natural Disaster?
On May 27 this year, during heavy rains in the northern part of the country, including the city of Khujand, strong winds blew. This was the first time in the history of Khujand that such strong winds were seen. According to the Municipal Emergency and Civil Defense Command, the speed was 19-20 meters per second. As a result, the city of Khujand suffered significant damage.
According to the overall detection data, more than 73 trees were uprooted. 39 of them were trees between buildings in the micro-district on the right bank, 2 of them were trees between residential houses on the left bank, and the rest were trees along the streets, which were victims of the terrible winds called “tornadoes”:
Tornadoes are strong winds that occur in the American continent and African deserts, which can destroy homes, demolish houses, uproot trees, and even kill people.
Some residents were without power for four hours as trees were uprooted and power lines were cut on the roadside. Again, when large trees were broken on the road, the movement of any kind of transport was suspended for some time, which also affected passengers.
This is the first time in the history of Khujand.
According to a citizen who called himself Salem, this was the first time he had encountered such strong winds in his life and he had never seen such winds before.
– We were on our way to the market at 8-12 in the morning when we heard a tree breaking and the driver stopped the car. We were all in fear when the driver said: No one can move.
Indeed, this disaster had a negative impact on people’s souls. Perhaps when faced with natural disasters, many people would forget about death and seek God’s forgiveness. Even the sound of the wind affected the children and woke them up from their sweet dreams.
– When the wind started to blow, making a roaring sound, my one-year-old started crying and I could not calm him down for an hour. When nature calmed down and the wind stopped, my child also stopped crying for a long time,” said a woman named Nigina (Olimova).
Tornadoes were predicted by babies?
It is said that nursing infants are aware of all natural disasters and sudden deaths. Perhaps this behavior of a one-year-old is not unreasonable? Or did he tell his mother the terrible news? Or did he realize the wrath of God and pity his sinful servant?
According to the official website “Khujand.tj”, a 36 x 6 meter signboard was installed on the right bank of the river in front of the building of the regional state administration, as well as a billboard on the street named after Rahim. The Bofanda neighborhood of Jalil in the 34th microdistrict was torn apart.
The 200-square-meter tin roof of House No. 6 in Community 19, part of the slate on the roof of the Regional Clinical Hospital, and 132 square meters of windows of the hospital were broken.
A staff member of the hospital who wished to remain anonymous said the district hospital suffered damages of around 200,000 somonis due to heavy rain and strong winds.
– Fortunately, half of this money will be paid by the Sughd region’s executive body of state power, which once again shows the kindness and care of the regional governor. But unfortunately, the rest of the renovation costs will be paid from the hospital’s budget and the pockets of its employees.
1,415 roof tiles were torn off and 132 square meters of window glass were broken in the city’s schools. The natural disaster also took students by surprise. This is also the reason for not attending classes.
Tahir, a third grader, said he wanted to go to school in the morning but returned home because he was scared. We asked him why and he gave the following answer:
– I was standing by the 32nd Micro-District Market waiting for passengers when the metal cover of the market roof accidentally got torn off and flew straight past, an inch away from my throat. This made me panic and I went home.
Strong wind for sin
Some elders and BroadCast Unitedlectuals from religious circles said that whenever social justice disappears, false witnesses increase, adultery and corruption prevail, and bureaucrats oppress the people, God’s wrath will come. Because most elders affirmed that the natural disasters in recent days, such as floods and terrible strong winds, are the wrath of God and the result of gathering together due to injustice.
The official website of the Khujand Municipal Government shows that the Municipal Disaster Relief Command has mobilized all the capabilities and technical means of the Municipal Emergency Command, Civil Defense Command and other service agencies and related units to clean up the roads and streets. Uprooted trees, broken branches, torn billboards, sidewalks and paths are cleared to ensure the unimpeded flow of vehicles, while other agencies aim to collect broken slabs and glass to restore the entire city to normal.
At present, the city government’s executive agency is implementing specific measures to strive to eliminate the damage caused by strong winds in the shortest possible time.
We also agree with our elders that it is natural disasters like these that warn people to abstain from lust, extravagance, and sin. It also allows you to be prepared for any emergency.
