Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea and one of the important propaganda tools of the North Korean government, has launched a website.
The website was first reported on Thursday, but appears to have been live on February 16, the day before Kim Jong Il’s 69th birthday. The site’s DNS (Domain Name System) record is Website: www.rodong.rep.kpwhich is required for public access to the server, first appeared on February 16.
The website appears to contain the full text of the daily newspaper and news since January 1, 2011. The daily newspaper is also available as a color PDF file.
The website is hosted on the same server as the Korea Computer Center Naenara website and the Council for Foreign Cultural Relations homepage, which is believed to be located in Pyongyang.
Rodong Sinmun articles have previously been available through the Among Our Peoples website, a China-based site that publishes official news and commentary from Pyongyang, but the PDF reproduction of the newspaper’s daily edition is likely to be of great interest to North Korea researchers.
The site is the latest in a series of new homepages launched by Pyongyang in the past six months. North Korea first gained full internet access in early 2010, and the country relaunched its national domain, .kp, earlier this year.
