Police to investigate threats against members
Members of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) have received multiple threats, including death threats, in person and increasingly on social media, during recent police crackdowns on crime on the island.
The brazen comments, posted on multiple online platforms, included threats of targeted attacks on specific members of the police force.
While the RSLPF respects the right of citizens to comment on matters of national interest, speech that incites or promotes violence, or that constitutes a credible threat to members of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force or any other person, is unlawful.
The severity of these threats, the context, and the intent of the person responsible are all considerations in determining whether such cases should be dealt with immediately or legally.
Therefore, citizens must be cautious and responsible when communicating online to avoid legal consequences.
The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force condemns these attacks and will do everything legally possible to protect its members. Investigators will work hard to identify and pursue all those responsible.
Section 114 of the Saint Lucia Criminal Code provides that any person who threatens another with death or grievous hurt with intent to put that other in fear of death or grievous hurt shall be liable on conviction on indictment to imprisonment for five years or on summary conviction to imprisonment for two years.
The RSLPF continues to work tirelessly to stop criminal activities in the country. We will not stand idly by and allow our members to be threatened. We reiterate that we will relentlessly hold accountable all those responsible.
