St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): Following the government’s request and initiative to ensure that the people of St. Kitts pay their mortgages with the National Housing Corporation (NHC), Housing Minister Geoffrey Hanley has confirmed that all is going well.
Since the government took office in 2022, there have been calls for people who own homes through NHC to pay up, as it is seen as a way for the company to continue to operate and maintain its mission.
For years, government officials have often complained that people are in arrears with their Social Security payments for a variety of reasons, including political ones.
Last year, the minister confirmed to reporters that the government implemented several initiatives to ensure flexibility in mortgage payments for houses built by companies. These initiatives included re-education on home ownership, refinancing and the creation of a credit unit responsible for contacting individuals.
However, as the government implemented these initiatives, concerns arose about people living in NHC-built homes who were on minimum wage or relied on social welfare. The government took these concerns into account.
In a recent interview, the minister provided an update on homeowners’ compliance with the regulations.
“NHC, we went through a period with the refinancing where a number of people were falling behind on their payments or maybe not paying them, but from the last report I’ve had, things have improved a lot and I want to commend those people for making home ownership a priority to make sure they meet their repayment commitments. So we hope that we don’t see that again in the future where people feel they shouldn’t have to pay. We know there are sometimes hard times and that can be understood or explained but we encourage people to be conscious citizens and continue to do that in terms of repayments.” – Housing Minister Dr Geoffrey Hanley
