As the new school year approaches, the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs urges parents and guardians across Saint Lucia to remain vigilant and proactive in ensuring the health and safety of their children. In light of the ongoing challenges posed by health issues, the Ministry of Health stresses the importance of staying informed and prepared to navigate the new school year.

The Ministry of Health has made several recommendations to parents, including providing children with basic hygiene products such as hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes, ensuring they understand the importance of good hand hygiene, and maintaining open communication about health and safety.

Janelle Dupre, health educator at the Ministry of Education, stressed the vital role parents play in creating a safe and healthy environment for their children.

“We encourage all parents to take the necessary steps to understand their child’s school’s reopening plans, safety measures and any specific guidelines that need to be followed. Being well prepared and informed is key to ensuring our children can have a productive and safe school experience,” Dupree said.

Additionally, parents are advised to familiarize themselves with the signs and symptoms of Mpox and other infectious diseases and to seek medical attention if any symptoms occur.

Dupre further added, “Parents must also focus on their children’s emotional well-being. Going back to school can be anxiety-provoking for some, so it’s crucial to provide a supportive environment where children feel comfortable expressing their emotions. A smooth back-to-school transition can set the tone for a successful year ahead.”
