The Singapore Dream no longer means just material success. It now encompasses a sense of fulfilment, meaning and purpose in people’s lives – Lawrence Wong (LW) speaking at the opening of the Forward Singapore Festival on 27 October 2023.

What LW said is all correct, but isn’t it true that you can only know the truth after you have tried it? Let me explain.

There is no doubt that Singapore is a very expensive place to live, raise a family and/or retire.

Whether we like it or not, we live in a material world and we are all material beings. The pursuit of fulfillment, meaning, and purpose in life are noble, beautiful, and valuable values, but they don’t pay the bills or put food on the table for our families. They can only take second place after satisfying materialism.

When I read LW’s exhortation, my first reaction and the first thought that crossed my mind was to smile and ask why he said all this while at the same time telling Singaporeans not to pursue only material success, i.e. the “5Cs”?

In my opinion, the LW’s appeal is idealistic at best and hypocritical at worst. That’s it.

If the PAP government is no longer able to create well-paying jobs for its citizens and an environment for its young people to grow, succeed and prosper, then it must seriously make way for those who can, or at least are trying. Absolutely no one is indispensable. Not even the PAP.

While the LW is right about everything he says, his advice rings hollow to me. If I were younger, I might be swayed by his eloquence, but alas, I am mature and wise enough to see clearly what is right and what is politically correct.
think.
