Etidal and Telegram removed 7 million pieces of content and shut down 1,554 extremist channels

The Global Center for Combating Extremist Ideology “Etidal”, in cooperation with the “Telegram” platform, removed 7,207,810 extremist contents and closed 1,554 extremist channels in the second quarter of 2023 (April-June). The team monitored digital propaganda activities published in Arabic on the “Telegram” platform, which belongs to three terrorist organizations (Al-Qaeda – Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham – ISIS), from which extremist content was removed from the terrorist Al-Qaeda. Al-Qaeda topped the list with 3,511,979 extremist contents on 535 extremist channels, followed by Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham with 1,951,527 extremist contents on 403 extremist channels, while the terrorist organization ISIS broadcast 1,744,304 extremist contents on 616 extremist channels.

On April 18, 2023, coinciding with the 27th of Ramadan, the broadcasting of extremist content reached its highest level, reaching 615,506 extremist contents and creating 81 extremist channels. Since February 2022, Al-Qaeda has spread extremist content for the first time, distributing 3,511,979 extremist contents through 535 channels.

It is worth noting that the global anti-extremist ideological center “Etidal” and the “Telegram” platform have joined hands for the second consecutive year. Since the beginning of this year, 28,233,979 extremist contents have been removed and 10,218 channels have been closed. The cooperation period is from February 2022 to June 2023.
