King Willem-Alexander, Queen Maxima and Prime Minister Mark Rutte of the Netherlands will attend the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. As head of the Kingdom of the Netherlands delegation, the King will address the opening of the General Assembly’s general debate on Monday 28 September, becoming the first Dutch head of state ever to do so. The Netherlands will be demonstrating to the 70th session of the General Assembly the importance it holds for the United Nations, ahead of its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
Foreign Minister Bert Koenders, Aruban Prime Minister Michael Emann, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Minister Liliane Plummen, Environment Minister Wilma Mansveld and Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Abutaleb have all announced their attendance at the 70th UN General Assembly.
In his speech, the King will discuss the significance of the United Nations and the Kingdom of the Netherlands’ contribution to peace, justice and development.
Queen Máxima will also attend the meeting in her capacity as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Financial Inclusion for Development. She will present her annual report on UN activities to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
On Saturday, September 26, Prime Minister Mark Rutte will give a speech at the Sustainable Development Summit, where the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be launched. These goals build on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which expire this year.
The SDGs aim to expand the scope of the MDGs by putting the themes of sustainability, inequality and peace on an agenda that applies to every country. The main goal is to end extreme poverty worldwide by 2030. Queen Máxima and Ms. Plowman will also attend the summit. Ms. Plowman has led the Netherlands’ implementation of the MDGs over the past few years as well as the Netherlands’ contribution to the drafting of the new SDGs.
During the UN General Assembly, US President Barack Obama will convene a summit of world leaders on UN peacekeeping operations, with Prime Minister Mark Rutte attending and delivering a speech. On September 26, Foreign Minister Bert Koenders will become co-chair of the Global Counterterrorism Forum.
The Saudi delegation’s schedule was filled with numerous events, talks and bilateral meetings.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia wishes to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (2017-2018). This desire is in line with the Kingdom’s international ambitions and commitments, and with The Hague’s status as the world’s legal capital. As a non-permanent member of the Security Council, the Kingdom will have the right to participate in decision-making, such as the authorization of UN peacekeeping missions and the protection of people in conflict zones.
