President Wavel Ramkalawan and First Lady Linda Ramkalawan were guests of honour at the graduation ceremony of the 18th School of Advanced Studies (SALS) students. The ceremony took place yesterday afternoon at the International Conference Centre Seychelles (ICCS).
The highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of awards to the best academic students, the best overall students in each subject, the Council Award, the Principal Award and the Chairman’s Cup. New this year was the Future Teacher Award, which recognises students who have excelled in the Future Teacher programme, which is run in partnership with the Seychelles Institute of Teacher Education (SITE).
The President’s Cup was awarded to Daniel Bedil, who has demonstrated consistency in all aspects of his studies over his two years. He is praised as an outstanding role model in terms of discipline and character, and is actively involved in the school’s extracurricular activities. Known for his self-drive and passion for exploring new paths in life, Daniel is an outstanding winner and well-deserved.
George Razanajatovo won the Minister’s Cup as the best overall student. George also won the top three academic awards, Ashlie Morel came in second place and Ammar Mohamed Muna came in third. Ammar also won the Computer Science Award together with Jonathan Albest.
Twelve alumni received awards for best performance in their respective fields, including biology, geography, computer science, English literature, French, chemistry, physics, mathematics and sociology. The recipient of the Aspiring Teacher Award was Kella Philoe, while Leroy Asba received the Council Award, which is sponsored by the SALS Council and is given to students who have made great progress during their studies.
A total of one hundred and twenty-one students graduated at the ceremony, having successfully attended and completed their respective courses.
In her speech, the Headmaster of the Senior School, Ms. Elaine Larue, encouraged the new graduates to pursue their passions, seize opportunities that spark their interests, and strive for excellence in all they do. She stressed that “Studying at SALS will open doors for you to become change agents and global citizens who take action to address increasingly complex and daunting challenges. The progress of our country depends on your willingness to return home after your studies and contribute to society.”
Minister of Investment and Industry, Mrs. Devika Widodo, a proud alumna of SALS, commended the graduates for their dedication and achievements and urged them to stay focused and perseverant in achieving their goals. She encouraged them to use their skills and knowledge for the benefit of the country.
Also present at the graduation ceremony were the Minister of Education, Mr Justin Valentin, the Minister of Investment, Entrepreneurship and Industry, Ms Devika Vidot, the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, the Honourable Sebastien Pillay, Chief Secretaries, Members of the National Assembly, SALS Board members, relatives of graduates and SALS management and staff.
