Ilsan, South Korea Tuesday, June 4, 2024: The President of the Republic of Seychelles, Wavel Ramkalawan, is currently leading the Seychelles delegation to attend the Korea-Africa Summit held at the Korea International Exhibition Center in Ilsan Province, South Korea.
South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol officially opened the summit and extended a warm welcome to all African leaders and representatives attending this important meeting hosted by South Korea.
Among the African leaders who spoke during the morning plenary session of the Heads of State, President Ramkalawan considered the first South Korea-Africa Summit to be an important milestone that marks the arrival of new opportunities for strategic cooperation and prosperity.
President Ramkalawan highlighted the various challenges affecting the African continent at the summit and stressed that they can only be addressed through collective cooperation and strategic partnerships.
“When tackling the complex challenges of our time, such as the climate crisis, transnational crime and conflict, it is clear that no country can solve these problems in isolation. The theme of our summit, “The future we create together: shared growth, sustainable development and solidarity”, resonates deeply with the vision outlined by Agenda 2063 for Seychelles and the entire African continent. It underscores the urgent need for collective action to promote shared economic growth and achieve our common aspirations as equal partners.
“The potential for a transformative partnership between Africa and South Korea, rooted in mutual respect and a shared commitment to sustainable development, is clear. By leveraging our respective strengths and synergies, we have the opportunity to catalyze positive change not only in our region but also globally,” President Ramkalawan stressed.
The President stressed that the partnership between the two sides is essential to developing potential through the strengthening of South Korea-Africa relations. “At the heart of our discussions was the need for inclusive growth. South Korea’s technological prowess, combined with Africa’s young demographics and abundant natural resources, provides fertile ground for cooperation in various fields. Our cooperation must benefit all sectors of society, empowering youth through quality education and adopting sustainable economic models. In addition, South Korea’s strong economy and Africa’s progress in economic integration, represented by initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), are cornerstones for promoting economic growth, strengthening trade, and increasing investment.
There will be opportunities in both regions.”
Speaking at the conference, President Ramkalawan also took the opportunity to highlight the importance of small island states in Africa and the cooperation possibilities offered by Africa SIDS. He further stressed Seychelles’ strong commitment to strengthening relations with South Korea in all areas.
“Africa, let us not forget, also includes African Small Island Developing States. Seychelles, with its strategic location and favorable business environment, is eager to strengthen economic ties with South Korea. We have a unique advantage in fostering entrepreneurship and connections. As a strong advocate of sustainable development, Seychelles is committed to deepening cooperation with South Korea in areas such as climate change adaptation, environmental protection and the blue economy. Investing in sustainable infrastructure projects will not only strengthen Africa’s economic stability, but also enhance its resilience, thereby consolidating the long-term South Korea-Africa partnership. I want to emphasize that sustainability is not just a goal, but a moral obligation that underpins our shared future.”
During the morning leaders’ plenary session, other African heads of state also spoke, including Ethiopia, Rwanda, Mauritius, Madagascar, Tanzania, Guinea-Bissau, Central African Republic, Ghana, Cape Verde, Kenya, etc. The plenary session of the Korea-Africa Summit was also an opportunity for President Ramkalawan to interact with other African leaders and senior government officials.
