ASTANA: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday proposed the establishment of a tripartite institutional mechanism, especially in the economic and investment fields, to further strengthen Pakistan-Turkey-Azerbaijan trilateral economic and commercial cooperation.
Expressing his views at the first meeting of the Pakistan-Turkey-Azerbaijan trilateral summit held on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, the Prime Minister stressed that Pakistan attaches great importance to its brotherly relations with Azerbaijan and Turkey, which are based on deep cultural, historical and religious ties and mutual respect and support on core issues.
The summit was attended by Turkish Prime Minister Shehbaz, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Heydar Aliyev.
Prime Minister Shehbaz welcomed the convening of the first meeting of the Pakistan-Turkey-Azerbaijan trilateral summit, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.
He called it a natural progression of trilateral cooperation among the three Muslim brother countries, which share similar views on a range of issues of common concern.
The Prime Minister noted that since the first trilateral foreign ministers’ meeting in Baku in 2017, the three countries have maintained good cooperation in the political, parliamentary and defense fields.
He also reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to work with Turkey and Azerbaijan to elevate trilateral cooperation into a strong multifaceted partnership covering all areas of common interest including economy, energy, tourism, culture, education, technology and innovation, healthcare and environmental cooperation.
The Prime Minister stressed the strong friendship and active people-to-people exchanges among the three countries and outlined the huge potential for cooperation in areas such as culture, tourism, academia and science and technology.
Earlier, Pakistan, Turkey and Pakistan had held trilateral consultations at the level of foreign ministers, speakers and defense officials.
Prime Minister Shehbaz arrived in the Kazakh capital on Wednesday to attend the Council of Heads of State of the SCO member states and the SCO+ Summit.
The Prime Minister was warmly received by Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov, Deputy Prime Minister Alibek Bekayev, Pakistani Ambassador to Kazakhstan Norman Bashir and other diplomats when he arrived at Nazarbayev International Airport.
