Martha Garcia It’s a permanent smile. Born in León, Parentina is also a stylish athlete. His 2024 is pure gold. He broke four Spanish running records (2,000m, 3,000m indoor and outdoor track and 5,000m…) and won the European bronze medal in Budapest in June. The explosion was no coincidence. Last year he had to decide whether to choose athletics or medicine. The competition had just ended and we had to bet. Right. This Friday he makes his Olympic debut with a bang, targeting the 5,000m final.

He received some offers that he couldn’t refuse.
It changed my life. I had never thought about the possibility of calling sports a job until the sixth grade. The priority was always to study. My idea was to finish my degree, attend the MIR, enter the hospital and do a residency. There was a clear path. Then I thought: “What if he gives me a few years?” The scale was tipping in the direction of medicine. When ON proposed to me to join the OAC sports team. They bet on me even more than I bet on myself. How could I not try it. Many athletes in Spain do not have enough money to become professionals, they have to work part-time, they do not have a physiotherapist, they cannot concentrate at high altitudes, or their coaches have two jobs…
He moved from Buitrago del Lozoya to live in St. Moritz, a place that is permanently concentrated at high altitudes.
If you tell me that I’ve been making these marks for three years… Although it was a little difficult at the beginning. Training has changed my life. I have a lot of social life and a lot of fun… I adapted and I’m doing well. Honestly, I think she can participate in the 2023 World Cup in Budapest (she is the Spanish champion, but by the decision of the Federation, she is not participating). It was a critical situation, but I became stronger. Maybe he worked harder. I didn’t go on vacation because there was no World Cup. I wanted to continue to compete. Later life gave me back this effort. 2024 is an important year.
It was given to German Thomas Dreissigacker, aka Moha Attaoui.
He is a master, a scientist. He loves data and is very passionate. He also devotes his life to this project. You basically “only” need to train here, because we train every morning and afternoon. It’s like a time-sharing job. I feel like I work 24/7, it’s hard, far away from home… It’s hard for your partner to understand. But it’s my passion and I enjoy it. Although it limits me from doing other things.

So, do you think Dr. Garcia or Athlete Garcia sounds better?
I decided to try to have a bit of both in my life, but first one and then the other. I had not fully enjoyed my university life. In sports, I was the Spanish champion and on the way back I started studying. My feeling is that my life is much easier now than when I was studying. My body is more relaxed. I made him work hard, sometimes beyond his ability. Now it is time to relax mentally and cheer myself up. It was a crazy time.
What is Marta like off the field?
Super active. I loved to party when I was a teenager. I also had a love affair with music. I went to music college for nine years and I played guitar. It’s sitting at home, gathering dust. Now I read it, and it’s something I hadn’t read before. Fiction.
How did you get started in athletics?
When I was three or four, I was in the standings behind my sister. I haven’t stopped since then. The competition conquered me and I loved competing. Training not so much.
