The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) Caribbean Research Program is developing a knowledge agenda with residents of the Kingdom’s Caribbean region. The Knowledge Agenda lists where the most pressing societal problems lie and how scientific research can contribute to solutions. In June and July 2024, NWO will organize public meetings on the six islands to determine whether the content is accepted.

The Knowledge Agenda is based on extensive surveys of residents and researchers in the six countries (islands) on social issues in 2019 and 2021. Following “Community Dialogue” sessions in June and July, the final Knowledge Agenda will be developed. It will be presented during the Dutch Caribbean Research Week in October 2024.
Sustainable scientific research from the region
Scientific research in the region has a solid foundation, with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) providing €2,500,000 per year in structural funding. With the launch of the Caribbean Research Platform (CaRP) later this year, NWO will provide additional support to all those involved in scientific research, with staff on all six islands.
Public Meeting Dates
NWO will organize one public meeting per country/island at a time, a “community dialogue” on regionally and locally relevant topics. Topics include poverty, food security, climate change and cultural identity. During the meetings, new topics can be raised and existing ones clarified.
