The Netherlands will provide an additional €10 million in emergency aid to Sudan. The additional aid was announced by Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Liesje Schreinemacher at a conference on the humanitarian situation in Sudan in Paris on Monday. The money will go to the World Food Programme to provide food to the Sudanese people.
“The International Red Cross and Red Crescent is right when they say this crisis is being forgotten,” said Ms. Schreinemacher. “Sudan rarely makes the front pages, even though nearly 18 million people there are facing severe hunger. We must increase international pressure because a ceasefire is vital. The millions of Sudanese who have taken refuge in the region need hope for the future.”
Unrestricted access
Not only is there a shortage of food, water and medicine in Sudan, but people who really need help are having difficulty getting it. According to the United Nations, only 10% of the hungry are currently receiving food aid. “In conflict zones, it is always difficult to deliver aid safely. But in Sudan, the warring parties are actively obstructing emergency assistance. Aid workers and aid are being stopped at borders, and NGOs are having to deal with red tape. The warring parties must greatly improve access.”
In very hard-to-reach areas, local people play an important role in delivering aid. In many cases, women and young people brave the challenges to provide food, protection and medical assistance. The United Nations and other aid organizations can use donations from the Netherlands to support these local initiatives.
Aid to Sudan
This additional contribution brings the total amount of the Netherlands’ support for emergency aid to Sudan in 2024 to more than €42 million. The Netherlands is also helping the Sudanese in other ways. The United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has provided €35 million in aid to Sudan, and the Netherlands contributes €55 million to CERF every year. The Netherlands also contributes to neighbouring countries hosting Sudanese refugees. Around 8 million Sudanese are internally displaced and 2 million have fled to neighbouring countries.
