The Netherlands and Ukraine are about to sign a 10-year security agreement. The agreement shows that the Dutch government is committed to providing lasting support to Ukraine in the fields of security, reconstruction and justice. The agreement means that the Netherlands will help Ukraine resist Russia and further integrate into the EU and NATO.
“Our own security is closely linked to Ukraine’s security,” said Foreign Minister Hank Bruins-Slote. “We must not forget for a single day that the heroic struggle of the Ukrainians is also our concern. Ukraine must be able to count on our support, not only now but in the long term. This also sends a strong signal to Russia, which expects Western support for Ukraine to eventually dry up. Without this support, Ukraine as we know it will no longer exist. The Russian threat will become more imminent, and the stability and security of our continent will come under serious strain.”
On July 12, 2023, at the NATO summit in Vilnius, the Netherlands announced that it would seek to conclude a bilateral security agreement with Ukraine, following the G7. The Netherlands and Ukraine subsequently entered into negotiations to work out the details of these agreements. The security agreement includes medium- and long-term military support arrangements, defense industry cooperation, improving Ukraine’s resilience (including its ability to respond to cyber threats), and improving interoperability between the Ukrainian military and NATO forces.
The Netherlands and Ukraine also agreed to continue working together on recovery and reconstruction and countering hybrid threats, to remain committed to truth and justice for all victims of the war, and to continue calling for sanctions to increase pressure on Russia. The formal signing of the agreement will take place soon.
