South African gourmet food giants Nando’s and Castle Lite have teamed up to create a unique blend of hot and cool. Both brands, praised on social media for their vibrant imagery, kicked off the collaboration with a playful and humorous campaign on billboards in Pretoria and Durban.

The exchange stems from two products launched by the two brands in early 2024.
In March, Castle Lite launched its 10-can Extra CCCCold cooler, which keeps your beer super cold for up to 12 hours within arm’s reach.
Nando’s recently launched Vusa sauce, which has a PERi-ometer spiciness that exceeds Xtra Hot, making it the hottest sauce to date, retaining Nando’s famous flavour but with a spicy kick, creating the perfect storm of hot and cold products.
At first, the competition seemed fierce, but the brands soon found common ground in catering to the country’s tastes. They recognised the importance of providing experiences for South African consumers, who love the fiery flavours of Nando’s as well as the cool flavours of Castle Lite.
“The timing of these two launches was so fortuitous that we had to reach out to each other. Both brands exist to bring joy and innovation to South Africans; ultimately we both want South Africa to achieve the same goal,” said Colleen Duvenage, Brand Director at Castle Lite.

This sentiment paved the way for a harmonious collaboration, showing that Nando’s and Castle Lite could work together to enhance the experience of innovation for both parties.
What started as a light-hearted billboard battle soon turned into brand synergy, with Castle Lite embracing Nando’s offer to “spice it up” and Castle Lite returning the favor by inviting Nando’s to “let loose” when needed.
Across platforms, including social media and radio, brands highlighted how complementary they are to each other.
When the heat of Vusa Sauce’s “TJO TJO TJO!” gets too intense, Castle Lite in the Extra CCCCold cooler provides the ideal cooling effect. This synergy is further demonstrated through a billboard that blends elements of both brands, with Nando’s flame grilling energy imagery cooling down while Castle Lite’s cool visuals warm up, symbolizing their united front.
Vanessa Nunes, General Manager of Grocery at Nando’s, said: “We have proven that these staples on the South African table are perfect together. Vusa features big flavour and heat – the spirit of Africa. It’s for those who like to take things to the next level.”
“The wonderful feeling of Vusa starts on the tongue and goes all the way to the soul that loves PERi. When the weather gets too hot, Castle Lite cools and refreshes. Together, we have created a dining experience that is truly South African,” concluded Nunes.
