In a major development, the social network X, formerly known as Twitter, was blocked across Brazil following a ruling by Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes. The blockage began on Saturday following a standoff between Judge Moraes and X owner Elon Musk over the platform’s refusal to comply with a court order to suspend certain accounts.
Musk Previously, Google had pulled the X team from Brazil in response to the court action, leaving millions of users unable to access the platform. As of Saturday morning, most Brazilians were unable to load the site, and the timeline has been frozen since Friday evening. Some users managed to access the platform through internet providers that have not yet implemented the ban, including Musk’s satellite internet service Starlink.
As the ban took effect, Brazilians began turning to alternative platforms such as Bluesky and Threads, leading to a surge in new users. While some have tried to circumvent the ban using VPNs, Judge Moraes warned that those who violate the ban could face heavy fines, making it increasingly difficult for Brazilians to access X.
Brazil, X’s fifth-largest market, has long been a hub for online discussion, and the blackout disrupted the country’s main outlet for political and social commentary.
