Shire Mayor Aindil Minkom, Deputy Shire Mayor Isa Minkom, elected members Azah Badlu and Osman Sloan, CEO Frank Mills and our Governance, Planning and Risk Manager Ibrahim Macrae travelled to Canberra in early July to meet with a number of Ministers and Senators.
In attendance were: Minister for Territorial Affairs, the Honourable Kristy McBain, NT Senator and Assistant Minister for Indigenous Australian Affairs, the Honourable Malarndirri McCarthy, Assistant Minister for Defence, the Honourable Matt Thistlethwaite, Member for Lingiari, the Honourable Marion Scrymgour MP, and as guests of the NT Local Government Association roundtable, the Honourable Senator Murray Watt, Minister for Emergency Management, the Honourable Catherine King MP, Minister for Infrastructure and the Honourable Linda Burney MP, Minister for Indigenous Australian Affairs.
The reception from the Ministers was even more welcoming than the weather and we had a frank discussion on a range of issues including Government funding, legacy waste management, social housing on the island, CHRMAP, sea level rise, flood prevention and the UN delegation’s visit to Cocos Island.
So glad they were back at Cocos Island and experiencing warm weather again.
