On May 15, 2024, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs published its 2023 Sustainability Report. This report focuses on our climate, circular economy and supply chain responsibility goals. In the report, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes the work done to achieve these goals and proposes plans for 2024.
Sustainable development mission
Two and a half years ago, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs launched its own sustainability program (Mission Sustainability). Under the motto “walking the talk”, Mission Sustainability is steadily moving towards sustainable operational management, sharing best practices with each other and the world. Key themes this year include travel options and making Ministry of Foreign Affairs real estate such as embassies more sustainable.
In the coming years, the Ministry’s plans will focus on:
Climate neutral: There are still challenges in achieving the goal of becoming a climate-neutral organization by 2030. In 2023, the ministry’s carbon footprint increased due to increased global air travel and electricity consumption. The surge in air travel may be a sequelae of travel restrictions during COVID-19. As the weather gets hotter around the world, the use of air conditioning increases, leading to increased electricity consumption.
The Department will continue to work on sustainability initiatives, such as making our real estate more sustainable, promoting sustainable travel options, and improving the way we collect travel and emissions data.
Circular Economy
In 2023, the Ministry made significant progress in the circular economy, launching circular pilot projects in embassies in Ankara, Dublin and Addis Ababa. These projects have achieved impressive and encouraging results and will continue in 2024. The Ministry will also launch new pilot projects, especially in the IT sector.
Supply Chain Responsibility: Efforts under this theme focus on good working conditions and the protection of human rights, such as ensuring that companies that provide services to our facilities pay their employees a living wage. In embassy and residential construction projects, the Ministry enters into agreements with contractors on occupational safety and good working conditions.
Sustainable organizational culture: Employees around the world are actively involved in making our organization more sustainable. Since 2023, the Embassy’s Sustainability Team has been playing an increasingly important role. Together they exchange knowledge and share effective practices and success stories.
Future Events: The results achieved in 2023 have laid a good foundation for activities in 2024, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will step up its efforts to develop new sustainable initiatives.
