His name is David Macaire, he is 46 years old and he has just been appointed as the new archbishop, replacing Michel Méranville, who is about to retire.

The Vatican this weekend confirmed information that has been circulating for weeks within the Catholic Church in Martinique.

David Macaire, 46, has been appointed Archbishop of Martinique, succeeding Michel Méranville, 79, who has held the senior post since 2004.

The Catholic Church describes Bishop Macaire as “a young, respected bishop who already has extensive experience in the Church through his various missions in France, especially in Bordeaux and the Var.

David Macaire was born on October 20, 1969, and attended Morne-Rouge College and then Schoelcher High School.

He began his novitiate in the province of Toulouse and began his religious career on September 17, 1995 in Marseille and was ordained a priest on June 23, 2001 in Toulouse.

The installation of Martinique’s 12th bishop is scheduled to take place next May at Fort-de-France Cathedral.
