A statement from the Criminal Defense Bar Association said, “Representatives of the Criminal Defense Bar Association met with the Honorable Chief Justice on Monday to discuss the position taken by the Criminal Defense Bar Association following the Supreme Court’s ruling. The Governor has decided to reappoint Mr Rory Field two years as Attorney General – after more than five years of repeated and well-publicized statements by the Governor-General that a suitably qualified Bermudian would be selected to hold the position.
“During the constructive dialogue with the Honourable Chief Justice, both parties reaffirmed their shared commitment to promoting the efficient and collaborative functioning of Bermuda’s criminal justice system in a spirit of mutual respect and understanding.
“In particular, the representatives of the criminal defence counsel made it clear that their actions were not intended to disrupt the special session and that their numbers were always respectful of the judicial officers present at the special session. It is regrettable if any disruption occurred or was perceived to have occurred. The Chief Justice was satisfied with this explanation.
“Friday’s action is not the first time the Criminal Defence Bar Association has attempted to address the failure to appoint qualified Bermudians to the position of DPP. In December 2013, we had a delegation from the Bermuda Bar request a meeting with His Excellency the Governor, who directed the delegation to meet with the Deputy Governor on December 11, 2013.”
