What piqued my interest was the Freeport address. Six gangsters (police didn’t use the word “allegedly”) were shot dead in Freeport. Normally I wouldn’t pay attention to such reports because given the small size of our country, the killing fields of criminals could be anywhere.
Now, I listened more carefully, sitting next to my brother Feroze, trying to figure out if we knew the man who had been killed by the police earlier that day, since we had spent most of our lives in what I called “great” Freeport. As the TV host continued with an almost routine story, I realized that the criminals did not belong to Freeport. In fact, the house they rented was located in an area that was already far beyond my reach. For all we knew, one of the men might have been from Cedros, the other from Toco.
As a result, we understand that criminal gangs are increasingly reaching almost every inhabited area of Trinidad and Tobago. Their operations are not limited to the communities in which they grew up, and the victims of their brutality could be you, me or anyone else.
It’s terrifying. Imagine this: You’re walking down the street, minding your own business, when suddenly car brakes screech and everyone nearby tries to dodge another attack. You’re not safe at home, at work, in your car or on public transportation, at work or leisure – hell, you’re not safe in your bed.
Outside – anywhere in the country – is not only unsafe, it is a deadly killing ground. The speed with which we have descended into complete chaos shows that criminals are everywhere. No church, mosque or temple is a holy place. The age of a child has no moral influence on them. How on earth did we get to this point?
I sat there, stunned, my mind racing, while my brother and I talked. We spent most of our early years in “great” Freeport – from McBean in the south to Chase Village in the north, Chickland and Arena in the east, and Waterloo-by-the-Sea in the west. When we were lads, we rode with the “entourage,” or so we thought, and we knew every “bad guy” within and outside our borders. As Freeporters, we took some pride in knowing these people. They were not like the barbarians of today, who totally ignored everyone and shot to kill – age and gender were no barriers.
These were mainly young men who chose to operate outside of my hometown of Freeport, and they would only bring disgust to the cavemen of my childhood – Ozzie and Daly, Pilgrim and Critchlow, Stanley and Abed, to name just a few of the bad guys from my time. Yes, some were criminals, but most of the “bad guys” were people who lived in the area and would look down on criminals who violated the code of conduct – respect for the elderly and elders, and the inviolability of children.
In those glory days, bad guys were often true community leaders who would sometimes beat up politicians and fight for their fellow men. Today’s poor young criminals have no loyalty or respect for the wombs they were born into. They are neither human nor animal-like, for animals have rules; they lack empathy.
If we must act to rid society of this plague that has befallen us, then we must first agree that the war we wage must unite all in the army of humanity. In fact, in order to justify the war needed to exterminate the aliens, we must purge our ranks of traitors who support the Ark Raiders. Be they government ministers, business leaders, policemen or thieves.
Big question: Who brings in the guns and the massive amounts of ammunition? Wipe them off the face of the earth! They are our undoing. They import the guns knowing they will be used against you and me.
You see, in this war on crime that everyone talks about but no one takes action on, we can only win if we are prepared to eliminate those members of law enforcement who are deeply entrenched in crime by aiding, arming and abetting these young criminals.
After the criminal tycoons are destroyed, the scriptures tell us that there is a time of peace and a time of war; there is also a time of killing. Now is that time.
