Xinhua News Agency, Kiev, March 30 (Reporter Chen Cong) The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense said on the 30th that Ukraine is ready to reach a new ceasefire agreement with rebels seeking independence in the eastern region starting next month.
“We are ready to withdraw our weapons and to enter into a unilateral ceasefire,” spokesman Olexandr Motuzyanyk told a news conference.
Motuzhanik also noted that Kiev hopes the rebels will also abide by the agreement reached on Wednesday by the Trilateral Contact Group on the Ukrainian Crisis.
The contact group met in the Belarusian capital of Minsk on Wednesday and called on both sides of the conflict in eastern Ukraine to cease hostilities and withdraw heavy weapons from the contact line from midnight on April 1.
So far, the rebels have not made any comments on the proposal.
The conflict between government forces and rebels in eastern Ukraine has continued since April 2014 and has caused nearly 10,000 deaths.
More than 30 previous rounds of ceasefire efforts have all ended in failure, with both sides accusing each other of violating the ceasefire agreement.
