History of Palm Island

As we mentioned above, the island was called Prune Island, it had sandy beaches but was uninhabited, had swamps and mosquitoes. In 1966, John Caldwell and his wife leased the island from the government for 99 years. They played a major role in improving the beauty of the island by planting palm trees. John made a habit of planting palm trees and was thus known as Johnny Coconuts. The name Prune Island was slowly forgotten and later Palm Island and the couple started building a ten-bedroom hotel called Palm Island Beach Club and managed it for the next 30 years, and the name Prune Island became known.

In 1999, the hotel built by the previous owners was sold to James Lane and Rob Barrett. The then existing building had fallen into disrepair and was therefore replaced by a new one, which contains 41 beautiful rooms and suites, a modern spa, swimming pool, tennis courts and much more. Some time later, two private houses were also purchased and transformed into wonderful holiday mansions, with all the facilities for groups of family or friends. In addition, a nursery was opened and a greenhouse was built to meet the need for herbs for the daily menu. Today, this charming island is a luxurious and charming holiday destination, visited by people from all over the world.
