The Israeli army continues its assault on the Gaza Strip and claims to have killed many militants of the radical Islamist Hamas. The army announced today that the cities of Gaza and Rafah, among others, were hit.
In the Rafah region in the southern Palestinian territories, “a terrorist group equipped with rocket launchers was eliminated in hand-to-hand combat” the day before, and “countless” Hamas militants were also killed in the central Gaza Strip.
A ceasefire may not come soon
The ground forces were supported by Israeli naval forces in the Mediterranean, which also targeted “terrorist targets” in the narrow coastal strip, according to the army.
The attacks came as Hamas announced on Sunday it was withdrawing from negotiations, with hopes for a ceasefire fading.
The Palestinian Islamist group justified its decision by pointing to the Israeli attack, which, according to Hamas, killed more than 90 people. Israel has said the strike targeted two senior Hamas leaders and “planners” of the October 7 attack, including Hamas military chief Mohammad Deif.
