In the first quarter of 2024, the Immigration Service issued a total of 1,728 initial authorizations, which is a decrease of 10.3% compared to the same period last year. As for renewable authorizations, according to data released by the statistics department on Monday, 1,107 were granted, 64 fewer than in the first three months of 2023. In addition, 681 residence and work permits were granted, which is equivalent to a decrease of 4.8%. Simple residence permits meant 336 authorizations (a decrease of 10.2%), and border worker permits were 70, 4 fewer than in the same period of 2023.
In terms of temporary authorization, it is worth noting that there are 462 temporary work permits, a decrease of 25.6% from the first quarter of last year; 128 foreign companies were temporarily authorized, an increase of 21.9%; the number of temporary work authorizations for scientific research, internships, sports training, etc. (26 items) increased by 1 unit compared with the previous session. In addition, five temporary border workers were authorized, the same as in the period from January to March 2023.
All in all, as of March 31 this year, the number of valid authorizations was 57,510, equivalent to an annual change of 3.2%, of which 52,371 were renewable authorizations (7% more).
In the first quarter, the total number of residence and work authorizations was 40,786, and the total number of simple residence authorizations was 9,697, up 8% and 4.1% year-on-year respectively. In addition, the total number of border work authorizations reached 1,802, an increase of 13 over the same period last year.
In terms of temporary authorizations, there were 4,704 temporary jobs (a decrease of 24.1%), which was equivalent to the winter quota; there were 319 temporary jobs in foreign companies, a negative change of 28.6%.
Both the decrease in temporary authorizations and the increase in residence and work authorizations are due to the transfer of temporary workers who are able to obtain residence and work permits under the general quota.
In addition, the country suffered 205 casualties in the first quarter of 2024, a decrease of 8.5% from the same period in 2023.
