Isle of Man Care (Manx Care) has been shortlisted for the prestigious Nursing Times Workforce Awards.
The organisation was shortlisted in the Mentoring of the Year – Nursing Staff Under 1,500 category for the mentoring scheme it has set up to support newly qualified registered nurses and midwives in their first year of work.
The programme has been developed over the past four years by David Neilan, Senior Practice Development Nurse at Manx Care, and his colleagues Kelly Gold and Nicola Howard. The programme is unique in that it includes all of the organisation’s newly qualified colleagues, such as those working in the community, working at the Isle of Man Hospice and those working in hospital settings. Typically, similar programmes run across the UK focus on supporting newly qualified professionals working in just one area or specialism. Running an integrated programme with colleagues from different specialisms maximises learning opportunities for colleagues and provides broad peer group support based on open discussion and shared experiences.
Manx Care’s mentoring programme also ensures the transition of newly qualified colleagues into effective nurses and midwives by supporting them through the often daunting first year ‘on the job’ and supports the organisation in being able to retain their services on the island.
David Neilan commented:
“We are extremely honoured to have been shortlisted for this outstanding award and are extremely proud to represent Manx Care more widely within the industry. Being able to provide such a high level of support to newly qualified nurses and midwives is a credit to all staff within Manx Care and is a result of the hard work of members of the Practice Development Team, colleagues who deliver the training and managers who protect this learning and development opportunity for newly qualified colleagues. Everyone has come together to ensure this valuable initiative is a success and it is fantastic to be a part of it.”
Teresa Cope, CEO of Manx Care, added:
“I would like to congratulate David, Kelly and Nicola, and everyone else involved in the development of the mentoring programme at the Isle of Man Care Centre. They really deserve the recognition and spotlight this has received from the industry, particularly for their commitment to ensuring our colleagues get the best possible start to their careers on the Island.”
The Nursing Times Staff Awards ceremony will take place on November 17, 2021.
