Gray hair requires a unique care routine to keep it healthy, soft, and shiny. There are a few tips for getting the best, most natural-looking hair color.

Here are some tips for getting shiny gray hair.

1. Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner

Gray hair requires a different shampooing and care regimen than fully colored hair. While you may have once chosen products based on your hair’s unique needs, such as volume or frizz prevention, you may want to switch to products that replenish moisture.

– As you age, gray hair tends to lose moisture because the hair follicles produce less sebum as you age, causing the hair to become dry and rough – says celebrity hairstylist and expert Gregory Patterson. Therefore, it is always recommended to use moisturizing and smoothing shampoos and conditioners.

2. Color-correcting shampoo

When hair loses its pigment, it turns gray. And when it loses its pigment, it changes color easily.

– Think of a short-sleeved white T-shirt; the more you wear it, the less fresh and clean it becomes,” says expert Brandie Devillier, noting that the same thing happens with our grey hair.

Dehydration, hard water and even too much sun can cause it to turn white.

– To reverse this, use a color-correcting shampoo several times a week. The best ones are purple. Since it is the opposite of yellow on the color wheel, it can help prevent gray hair from turning gray and keep it white and healthy – says Cindy Marcus, a professional hairdresser in Las Vegas.

Purple conditioner can also help with this process, just be sure to follow the directions on the bottle.

3. Take care of your scalp

A healthy scalp means healthy hair.

– Hair grows outward from the follicle, so taking care of your scalp and roots is just as important as the hair you see- says Patterson.

One of his favorite types of products is scalp scrubs.

– This aids skin cell renewal and helps the scalp skin remain relaxed – he says.

His second favorite product type is scalp oil.

– As we age, we produce less sebum, or fat, from which the hair naturally gets its protection and moisture – he explains.

Therefore, Patterson says that when we lose hair, we must replace it so that it maintains its “youthful” shine and texture. He recommends massaging a few drops into the scalp daily. In the morning, use a natural fiber brush to apply the product to the mid-lengths and ends of the hair to mimic the scalp’s natural sebum protection.

4. Increase gloss

5. Wash your hair less often

Gray hair is often drier and more brittle than fully colored hair, and frequent washing can worsen the problem.

– Our hair needs the natural oils produced by the scalp to keep it looking shiny and healthy – says Marcus. Excessive washing can strip your hair of these essential oils.

According to Best Life, most people with gray hair can get by with washing their hair once or twice a week — if your hair is extremely thin, Marcus recommends washing it every other day at most.
