SEOUL, March 31 (Xinhua) — Former South Korean President Park Geun-hye was arrested early Friday morning after a Seoul court approved the prosecutor’s request for her arrest. Park was impeached earlier this month over a corruption scandal.
The court said in a statement that Park was found guilty of the main criminal charges, but concerns remained that she might destroy evidence.
Prosecutors applied for the arrest warrant earlier this week, which was issued by the court after a hearing that lasted nearly nine hours on Thursday, the longest in the country’s history.
Park Geun-hye becomes the third former South Korean leader to be detained. South Korea’s first female president became the first to be removed from office by impeachment, with the Constitutional Court making a historic ruling on March 10 to approve the impeachment.
