The event, which took place on Monday 5 August and was hosted by the DStv Content Creator Awards, saw speakers explore topics such as digital amplification of commercials, campaigns and programmes, and what brands are looking for in their KPIs in terms of trends and engagement.
Govender shared valuable lessons she wished she had known earlier in her career, while Schimmel gave important advice all creators should know about content regulation and legality.
The symposium, now in its second year, is a key event on the Awards calendar, designed to support creators through creative sharing and provide valuable insights into the world of content creation.
Chance of winning
Also at the seminar, Renaldo Schwarp, Senior Manager, Multiplatform, DStv South Africa, announced that DStv will be hosting a competition for content creators to share how they prepare for viewing. all Watch football with DStv.
This competition provides talented content creators with an opportunity to share entertaining, lifestyle-focused video content.
The winner will win R20 000 cash, tickets for two to the 2024 DStv Content Creator Awards, an official backstage photo opportunity and a bar bill of R1 000. To win, creators must use the hashtag #footbALLonDStv and tag DStv on the respective social media platforms.
Make money creating content
The first panel discussion, titled “How to Find Your Niche and Monetize Your Content,” addressed a key question many creators face: how to attract a niche audience and ultimately make money from content creation.
Moderated by Omar Morto, the panel discussion included Kim Jayde, Tums The Narrator and Phaello Tshabalala, who shared their insights and personal journeys into becoming professional content creators.
Tshabalala shares how she started her career through industry networking and how she earned the trust of brands to gain their confidence to invest in her work.
Jayde discussed the importance of staying true to content and staying authentic when working with brands.
She also highlighted her journey to remain relevant in the content space since her days as a model and TV host over a decade ago.
Finally, Tums The Narrator explains the business side of content creation and stresses the importance of finding a niche within a niche.
She also discusses the importance of open briefings and how to push back respectfully to ensure partnerships are mutually beneficial for brands and creators.
How creators and agencies work together
Jayde then took over as moderator to discuss how creators and agencies can work together.
Joining her in the discussion were Ntokozo Masimula, Head of Culture and Partnerships at Duma Collective, Greg Walsh, CEO of G&G Productions, and Manuela Dias de Deus, CEO of One-eyed Jack, who shared what they look for when connecting brands with creators and what they look for when choosing the right creator for their brand.
Masimula discussed how brands can seek out authentic, relevant content within carefully curated aspirational material while still incorporating a brand narrative.
He explains that successful campaigns require balance and compromise, and provides valuable insights into contracts and what creators should focus on.
Walsh stressed that his team prioritizes the passion of potential influencers when selecting partners.
He shares his experiences working with Caspar Lee to promote events such as Rage Festival, highlighting how influential these collaborations were at the start of the social media boom and how they highlighted the power of influencer marketing in business.
PR, Podcasting and Broadcasting Basics
One-eyed Jack founder Manuela Dias De Deus talks about the evolution of PR with the rise of influencers and how these elements are now converging.
She also offers some PR dos and don’ts for creators, focusing on building their brand and elevating the brand they represent at the event.
