In Mongolia, sports have not yet become a major topic in society.

One of the themes of this issue is “Paris – 2024 Olympic Games”. We invited Batbold Batushkyi, Chairman of the Mongolian Olympic Committee, as a guest.

In 2017, he was elected as the first vice president of the Mongolian National Olympic Committee and has served as its president since 2022. He has been a member of the International Olympic Committee since 2020.

– You are not only a representative of the business community, but also a social activist who has contributed to the promotion of Olympism in Mongolian sports. This year is the Olympic year, and one topic that cannot be avoided is the Olympics. What do you think of the success of the Mongolian team and athletes in the Olympics?

– In fact, I am cautious about predicting the success of teams and athletes before the Olympics. Distorting reality or creating expectations has both positive and negative psychological effects on athletes. Since Mongolia’s first participation in the Tokyo Olympics in 1964, the results have improved at each Summer Olympics, and the number of athletes participating in the Olympics, the success of participating in the Winter Olympics without hesitation will undoubtedly repeat.

Even during the pandemic, we overcame difficulties, maintained our success, and participated in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Mongolia has 30 Olympic medals despite a population of 3.5 million. Some countries with a much larger population than Mongolia have achieved more teams and athletes in terms of the number and quality of medals. I think this is one of the world’s achievements. The Mongolians are considered a talented nation in sports.

In this French Olympics, the ratio of male and female athletes in our team is almost 50:50, which means that we can implement the gender equality principle proposed by the International Olympic Committee and the United Nations concept. In fact. In addition, during the “Paris-2024” Olympics, a major event will be planned to promote Mongolia to the world. A “Mongolian House” will be built in the “La Villette” Park in Paris, a Mongolian stage carpet will be built, and an event will be organized to promote national heritage, culture and customs.

We will be there to host Mongolian guests and promote our country during the 16 days of the Games. Modern Nomads LLC director M. Yesunmunkh and his team at Tengaru TV have been working tirelessly over the past few months to organize these events together with a working group from the Ministry of Education and Culture. The event is jointly organized by the Mongolian Government, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Mongolia in France.

In addition, the national airline MIAT also provided discounts on air tickets for the Mongolian team during the Olympic Games and solved the problem of free transportation of sportswear from Japan for athletes participating in the “Paris-2024” Olympic Games. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Mongolian Olympic Committee for the “Mongolian House” project and to the organizations and companies that jointly support Mongolian athletes.

The “Mongolian House” plans to invite more than 100 IOC members, including many heads of state, senior government officials, and businessmen.

Another big goal of ours is to present a proposal to organize the 2027 IOC Session and the 2030 Youth Olympic Games in Mongolia.

The 2018 Youth Olympic Games were held in Argentina. The 2022 Olympics were originally scheduled to be held in Senegal, but they were not ready to host the Olympics, so they decided to host it in 2026. We will soon accept proposals for the host country for 2030. That is why we believe Mongolia has the potential to host the Youth Olympic Games.

In any developed country, hosting the Olympic Games would have a great economic and financial burden and pressure, but the International Olympic Committee, which is not the host, supports everything from the expenses of the athletes of the Youth Olympic Games. Therefore, one of the main goals of the “Mongolia House” project is to promote the country, support its athletes, and get support for the right to host large events in the country. If this is done, it will be possible to build a new stadium in Huyyyam well or in a place supported by the state and build a campus for athletes nearby. Since then, there have been successful examples in other Olympic countries, who decided to double the development of these towns and communities by providing mortgages to citizens and providing infrastructure. Olympism is not only about supporting the development of sports, but also how sports can benefit the country’s socio-economics, how to support the government, and how to protect the health of the people.

– You have been elected as the President of the Mongolian National Olympic Committee and a member of the International Olympic Committee. How do you evaluate the development of professional sports and the concept of Olympism in Mongolia, and how do you see its future?

– Mongolia is one of the few countries in Asia that is a member of the International Olympic Committee. This means they have the right to vote on major Olympic policy decisions, such as the IOC’s rules and regulations, which sports will be included in the Olympics, and which country will get the right to host the Olympics.

This is the second time that the IOC has selected Mongolia as a member. As Mongolians may know, Mr. Sh Magwan was elected from 1977 to 2007 and has been an honorary member since then. In 2020, I was elected as a member of the committee, 13 years after 2007. Since 2017, he has been elected as the first vice president of the Mongolian National Olympic Committee and participated in many Olympic Games throughout his tenure.

Just because of the Olympics, some athletes are talked about, but other times, public sports and sports do not reach the public. There are few spectators at international competitions, which shows that the sport is not popular among the public. If you look at countries like South Korea, China, and Japan, many Olympic sports have developed to the level of national sports. When there are competitions, people will take time out to watch the competitions. The competition halls and stadiums are packed with spectators. But when there are big international competitions, we have no spectators. In rural areas, some sports are not developed at all, and there are two or three sports that are slightly developed.

Sports first developed as a national sport, and professional athletes were born in this process. We don’t know how many talented children are unable to develop their talents because of such situations. That is why we pay more attention to this aspect, aiming to implement the Olympic values and education programs implemented by the International Olympic Committee.

This means introducing educational programs for the development of the Olympics, how to work in a team, how to cultivate ethics, etc.

It is currently in the translation stage. In today’s fast-growing e-sports world, almost all children rely on video games and screens, and they should be attracted and encouraged to participate in sports. The question is how to consider sports, physical activity and health in a coherent way, and what policies to use to create it. There is a reason why the Mongolian National Olympic Committee cooperated with the Maternal and Child Health Center and the International Women’s Organization.

One of the goals and activities of the IOC is to spread knowledge about how to protect health, how to keep fit and how to make proper nutrition a habit, and to implement it in conjunction with the UN policy plan. This is detailed in the Olympic Agenda 2020+5. It is not just a matter of registering athletes and granting them the right to participate in the Olympic Games. That is why I think it is appropriate to implement it in our country as well.

– After the Paris Olympics, will your activities take a new direction?

– Closer cooperation with the government, administrative organizations, the private sector and companies. For example, we are discussing cooperation with the capital to build a stadium. I hope to hold the opening ceremony of the Youth Olympic Games in a stadium that can accommodate 20,000 people. Maybe in the future, world-class singers and stars can perform there. Mongolia is such a possible country. Now the festival is about to take place. It is time to have such a large sports and art stadium. I think that when thousands of tourists come every year, Mongolians who do not go looking for festival tickets can also see the opening of the festival in large numbers.

– How do you see your future career? Should sports development and business be combined? Which one should you focus on more?

– Business development and sports development go hand in hand. In any case, in addition to good policies, money and funding are very important to carry out planned and expected work. So, if you run it well, sports federations and organizations that sponsor competitions will increase, and new events of the Olympic Committee and projects like the Mongolian House will be successful. The growth and development of national enterprises is also important for this. It is the standard of countries to promote sports development through cooperation with efficient enterprises and the successful development of their own enterprises. The IOC is a top partner or “Olympic Partner” that cooperates with global companies and has marketing cooperation agreements with private companies such as Toyota, Samsung and Alibaba to carry out large-scale projects.

The expenses start with the rent of the “Mongolia House” complex, which will operate during the “Paris-2024” Olympic Games. This work is being carried out with the participation of partner organizations. In addition to the above-mentioned government agencies, the private sector such as Khas Bank, Skytel, Monnis and Petrovis have supported the Mongolia House project from the beginning. It was even presented to the Secretary-General of the Olympic Council of Asia and supported. We also regularly support sports associations or athletes through our business activities. With this example, we try to encourage the development of sports and Olympism in our country’s enterprises. For example, TOP companies and enterprises are invited to participate in the construction of the new stadium.

I am sure that many more private sectors will be added in the future. If this is successfully held, it will be in the “Harbin-2025” Asian Winter Games, “Milan-Cortina-2026” Winter Olympics, “Los Angeles-2028” Summer Olympics are coming soon.
