Cairo, December 17 (Xinhua) — Arab League Deputy Secretary-General Ahmed Ben Khalifa ruled out the possibility of NATO intervention in Syria on the 17th.
Ben Hurley, meeting with a NATO delegation led by Dirk Brungelmann, NATO Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy, said the possibility of NATO intervention in the Syrian crisis was “completely ruled out” because current efforts were focused on a political solution rather than a military one.
Ben Hariri said the Arab League is working to provide humanitarian aid to Syrian refugees, end violence and killing in Syria, and engage with the opposition to unify the camp and form an entity that can assume responsibilities.
Ben Hurley mentioned that a project called “Geneva 2” is currently being planned, which is based on the consensus reached by major international powers in Geneva on June 30.
Under the Geneva Agreement, the Syrian government and the opposition must form a transitional administration on the basis of consensus.
Ben Hurley revealed that the United States, Russia and the UN-Arab League Joint Special Envoy for Syria, Brahimi, are currently negotiating on the “Geneva 2” project, aiming to form a consistent version of the protocol and submit it to the UN Security Council for approval.
Ben Hurley said that the Arab League and NATO delegations also discussed issues such as strengthening bilateral cooperation in combating terrorism, eliminating weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East, and the latest developments in regional countries.
Regarding the meeting between Arab League Chairman Nabil Elarabi and Brahimi scheduled for Tuesday, Ben Hariri said the two sides will discuss the results of Brahimi’s recent talks with EU foreign ministers on Syria, the current situation in Syria, the position of the international community on the Syrian crisis and the role of the opposition alliance “National Coalition of Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces”, which was established by Syrian opposition groups in Doha, the capital of Qatar, in early November.
