At Norfolk Island Tourism Centre our core business is selling Norfolk Island holiday packages to inbound tourists and promoting the island to new audiences. Our physical waste is relatively low as the nature of our business is to provide a service and help tourists book travel to Norfolk Island. Where possible we do not print documents but keep soft copies and any excess paper used is recycled into notebooks or shredded and donated for composting, chicken coops etc.
We love working with sustainable businesses, including an initiative we started 7 years ago with former environmental organisation WildMob. We started asking our customers to reduce their use of plastic bags by giving them a reusable shopping bag when they arrived in Norfolk, with a message encouraging them to help. By using a cloth bag while on holiday, you reduce the use of plastic bags, help keep our waters and environment free of plastic waste, and protect our environment, endemic species such as the Green Parrot (whose portrait is printed on our bags). The bags are also a practical promotional tool for the island as visitors take them home to use in their daily lives.
Our team is very mindful of our environmental footprint. We’ve adopted practical habits in the office to reduce waste, such as collecting lunch scraps to feed our chickens at home and avoiding takeaway containers – instead, we take plates and reusable cups to nearby cafes, including Seriously Chocolate, our office lunch haunt. Our office is solar powered, and we take care to save energy by turning off lights and electrical devices when they’re not needed.
Norfolk Island Tourism Centre supports the Plink and Melaleuca Waste Reduction Challenge, an important initiative to encourage our communities and visitors to adopt simple and practical solutions to reduce general household waste.
The Waste Reduction Awards are sponsored by Norfolk Island Tourism Centre
