Torino Sporting’s new president Garibaldi: “This city will become the capital of Italian tennis”

Turin. Looking to the future in the name of continuity. Pietro Garibaldi’s term as President of the Circolo della Stampa – Sporting officially began yesterday and will end in 2026. He is the successor to Luciano Borghesan (still a councillor), to whom he wanted to thank personally for “the incredible work he has done in these four years”. The two vice-presidents, Stefano Motta and Andrea Pellissier, are already confirmed, and they will be joined by newcomers Paolo Griseri and Federico Calcagno.

Garibaldi, 54, full professor of political economy at the university since 2005 and member of the organizing committee of the International Economic Festival, has been a member of the Corso Agnelli Club for 25 years: “Our real wealth is more than a thousand members”, he said. Like his predecessors, he wants to dispel the myth of “exclusive places, inaccessible ivory towers: our city is an urban heritage and we want to open it to everyone”.

Garibaldi inherited the ATP Finals (the last city edition is scheduled for 2025) and bets on Turin becoming the capital of tennis: “Thanks to unique industrial and financial sponsors, our city has the possibility to position itself as a reference point, not just in Italy, but on the map of this sport.” One of the missions of the new president is to host a major international tournament permanently in Turin: “We have the training center venues created for the ATP Finals, as well as an outdoor stadium with a newly renovated clay court: some clubs in Italy have our luck and they have the best.”

The priority for the next four years is not to repeat the slow decline and oblivion that followed the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. To do this, we will increasingly focus on young people (“We are the second national club”), Federtennis membership, we want to expand our schools») and the participation of students from nearby universities, and provide new space for the cricket pitch.

Meanwhile, in December, after the second edition of the ATP Finals, the Circolo della Stampa – Sporting will host the Serie A final, which will be held in the city until 2026. Afterwards, cultural activities will continue in the direction pioneered by Luciano Borghesan: Set will return in the summer, with Neri Marcoré having accepted Encore as artistic director.
